Grand Paradise Samaná

Samaná is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the northeastern province of the Dominican Republic. Its capital is Santa Bárbara de Samaná.

The province, with more than 92,000 inhabitants, spread over 854 km2 of tropical forests, coconut groves, hundreds of beaches with turquoise crystal clear waters, waterfalls and protected national parks.

It takes about half an hour to cross the peninsula north to south and an hour from West to East.

It was discovered on January 12th, 1493 by Christopher Columbus, who was greeted with a barrage of spears and arrows from native Taíno warriors.

Each year between the months of February and March, humpback whales leave the cold waters of the North Atlantic and swim down to breed near the shores of Samaná. They can be easily seen from the city port.

Cayo Levantado is a small island barely 2.4 km in circumference located in the Bay of Samana. Legend tells the treasure hunters have come to this island long ago. The sand is powdery white and the sea turquoise blue water, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. We had the chance to do some snorkeling, and since there are several clumps of coral, you find colorful marine life. Cayo Levantado is also known as Bacardi Island because some palm trees resemble those of the advertising of Bacardi.

The island is divided into two sectors, the public beach (about a quarter of the island) with its services like snack bars, shops, toilets, souvenir photos, messages on the beach. etc.. and the private sector of the Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado. Please note that due to the popularity of Cayo Levantado, hundreds of tourist venture to the island each day, including cruise ships that offer an excursion to Cayo Levantado.

We explored the private sector of Cayo Levantado, to visit the Gran Bahia Principe hotel and also the public sector during the tour of the « Los Haitises » park. Excursionists from the public beach cannot enter the private areas of the Gran Bahia Principe Cayo Levantado. The island has two docks, one for the public sector and the other, a few meters away, for hotel guests.

This Gran Bahia Principe has no Pueblo annexed to the hotel, but guests can visit the Pueblo Principe in the village of Samana, located across from the Gran Bahia Principe Cayacoa.
