Samaná is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the northeastern province of the Dominican Republic. Its capital is Santa Bárbara de Samaná. The province, with more than 92,000 inhabitants, spread over 854 km2 of tropical forests, coconut groves, hundreds of beaches with turquoise crystal clear waters, waterfalls and protected national parks. It was discovered on January 12th, 1493 by Christopher Columbus, who was greeted with a barrage of spears and arrows from native Taíno warriors. Each year between the months of February and March, humpback whales leave the cold waters of the North Atlantic and swim down to breed near the shores of Samaná. They can be easily seen from the city port. |
It takes about half an hour to cross the peninsula north to south and an hour from West to East.

This hotel is located 45 minutes from Samana International Airport, near the capital of the province, Santa Barbara de Samana. Like all the Gran Bahia Principe, there is Pueblo Principe located near the resort, the Pueblo Principe of the Gran Bahia Principe Cayacoa is in the village near the Bay of Samaná. It's a pretty village with colorful shops, bars, restaurants, wireless Internet, medical service 24 hours, bank, disco, etc.. It is accessible by golf cart (about 2 minutes from the hotel). The shuttle makes the round trip every hour from 10:00 to 2:00. Click HERE to see our photos of this little village. There are also few shops located at the hotel entrance, to purchase souvenirs and other items such as rum, water, coffee, etc.. Facing the shops, you will find the hotel's kid's club. For those who wish to withdraw money (dominican pesos), there is an ATM near the gatehouse. What surprises most at this hotel by its height and location of such structure is the elevator to access the beach. People with reduced mobility should avoid this hotel, because there are many steps on the site. It is a great place to get in shape between two hearty meal! Fortunately, the hotel offers free transportation by shuttle from rooms to the lobby. You can call the lobby from your room, to ask for a shuttle. There are regular transfers. The hotel offers the « Royal Golden » package with many inclusions which nice junior suites located in buildings (3-floor) no.31, 32 and 33 in front of « Playa Loma Escondida » (see map of the hotel below). Golden club clients have a gold bracelet (green for regular customers). The food at the buffet is excellent just like the « A la carte » restaurants on the map. A noteworthy fact, avoid rooms in the main building (#200), as these rooms separate the lobby (and lobby bar) from the buffet restaurant. It must be very noisy to hear people talking on the way to the buffet or return. A sign indicates to remain silent, but not too many respects it! These are not rooms in the Royal Golden package. Wine is the same everywhere in the Gran Bahia Principe in Samana. It is a house label. This is not a great vintage, but acceptable! The hotel staff is attentive and smiling. A dress code is required for men in some restaurants, long trousers and sleeved shirt. When booking « A la carte » restaurants, they give you a coupon you must be present at the restaurant for dinner.
